Vaughan stars in win for Over 50s 2nd XI

A dominant batting performance saw Shropshire Over 50s 2nd XI open their 2026 campaign with a nine-wicket victory over North Wales at Mochdre CC.

A 92-run opening partnership between Rob Peel and Warwick Vaughan set the side on the way to victory after they had restricted their hosts to 164-9 off their 45 overs.

That came to end when skipper Peel was run out for 44, but Vaughan went on to post 88 not out, ably supported by Mark Jones who hit 27 off 29 balls to secure the win in the 39th over.

Earlier the bowlers had restricted North Wales with Julian Gallimore taking 2-18, Jones 2-21 and Bobby Gill 2-18.

The Over 60s are still to find their batting form this season as they were dismissed for just 56 on their trip to Banbury to take on Oxfordshire with Mike Sanders hitting top scoring with 21.

The hosts knocked off the runs for the loss of one wicket.

The Over 70s found the going tough when they travelled to Fairford to take on their Gloucestershire counterparts.

The hosts batted first and 210-1 from their 40 overs with Dave Shaw claiming the only wicket to fall.

In the reply opener Andy Kemp hit 29 and Tym Fern 16 not out, but Shropshire were dismissed for 98.
