Shropshire Junior League winners crowned
It’s been a great season in the Shropshire Junior Leagues with a record number of teams and participants involved.
In total, 124 teams were entered across five age groups from clubs across Shropshire and beyond.
Competitions ran at Under 11s Development, Under 11s Hard Ball, Under 13s Pairs/T20, Under 13s T20 and Under 15s.
This season has also seen the launch of an Under 17s competition to give that age group the chance of playing peer cricket once the exam season was over – and that has also proved popular amongst the teams taking part.
Competitions organiser Shannon Aston said: “It’s been great to see all the Junior League cricket taking place across the county this Summer.
“Thank you to all the coaches and junior organisers who have taken the time to sort fixtures, officiate at games and ensure the smooth running of the competitions.
“Well done to all who took part and congratulations to all the winners. We are already looking forward to running our competitions again in 2027.”
Lead Officer Steve Reese said: “It has been great to see record numbers of teams and players participating.
“But on the flip side we have also experienced high levels of conceded games, teams dropping out after committing to play, which left a couple of divisions light on number of games and no time for alternatives.
“We would impress on clubs, when they commit, they must be able to fulfil their fixtures.
“We have arranged some regional cluster meetings in October to discuss Junior Leagues and Girls Leagues. We have asked clubs to submit areas that they would like to discuss and already cancelled games and over-age players are coming to the fore.
“One of the benefits of the Junior Leagues is the fact that clubs get the chance to shape and influence how the competition looks and then this becomes owned by the clubs.
“Recent history has shown that we have a review every two years, so any changes have time to be tested and bedded in rather than change for changes sake and not giving things a period of time to be tried.”
“The highlights this year for me have been the take up for the Under 17 competition – we lose a lot of players beyond the U15 age group – plus the success and popularity of the Development League which really does fill that void between Dynamos and U11 Hard Ball.
