Cricket festival to celebrate ICC Women’s T20 World Cup

Junior schools from across Telford & Wrekin came together today for a fun-filled festival as part of national celebrations to mark 50 days until the start of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

Around 80–90 Year 3 and Year 4 pupils took part in the event at Haberdashers’ Adams Grammar today – with many getting their first taste of cricket.

Pupils enjoyed a range of activities including cricket skills games, quick-fire cricket matches, and team challenges throughout the morning.

Schools attending included Castle House School, Thomas Telford Free School, St Peter’s and St Paul’s Catholic Primary School, Muxton Primary School, Aqueduct Primary School and Lawley Primary School.

The day was supported by young leaders from Haberdashers’ Adams Grammar School, who helped deliver activities and inspire the next generation of players.

Cricket Shropshire coaches Shannon, Luke and Amber were on hand throughout the event, ensuring every child had the chance to join in, learn new skills and enjoy the game.

Organiser Frankie said: “Today is about celebrating the Women’s T20 World Cup by hosting an event that introduces cricket to Year 3 and Year 4 children from local Telford & Wrekin schools.

“It has been fantastic to utilise the young leaders from Haberdashers’ Adams Grammar, who have helped make the day such a success.”

The festival highlighted how cricket continues to grow across the county, giving more children the opportunity to try the sport in a welcoming and enjoyable environment.

More than 236,000 children from across England and Wales picked up a bat and ball today, making it the biggest single-day cricket participation event in UK history.

From first-time players in playgrounds to matches on school fields, girls and boys everywhere came together to play, learn and be inspired.
