Warning to clubs after theft from changing rooms

Cricket clubs in Shropshire have been warned to be on their guard after a sneak thief stole phones, cash and car keys from changing rooms during a game at Oswestry CC.

He then made his escape in one of the opposition player’s cars – a silver/grey BMW – while the game against Frankton continued last night (Thursday).

The thief snuck into both changing rooms during the game to take his haul which included a number of other sets of car keys.

Police were called and CCTV footage has been recovered which clearly highlights a man in his 50s was involved.

The game was abandoned when the theft was discovered by one of the home players, who alerted those on the field.

Naomi Payne from Oswestry CC said; “It is really disappointing that someone would come and do this. We try to be a welcoming and family friendly club, and didn’t expect to be raided like this during what was an excellent game watched on by many spectators.

“It is really disappointing and the thefts have put everyone on edge – it’s heart-breaking.”

Anyone who has any information are asked to contact the police who are investigating.

Cricket Shropshire Lead Officer, Steve Reese said: “It’s really upsetting to hear about this happening at one of our cricket clubs.

“We would urge everyone to be on their guard and to make sure that changing rooms are locked at all time when they are not in use.

“I’d suggest clubs look at how they operate their facilities during matches and the safekeeping of valuables during a game.”
