Top marks for schools at awards
Schools across Shropshire were recognised for their work in promoting the game at the Presentation Night held at the Albright Hussey Hotel.
The awards were presented to schools in Primary, Secondary and SEND categories by coaches Ryan Lockley, Katie Rushton and Tyler Ibbotson.
Neither Longlands Primary or Shortwood Primary were able to attend on the night, so their awards will be passed on to them.
Primary School of the Year 2024 – Longlands Primary School
Ryan said: “Longlands Primary School has been instrumental in the development of cricket in Market Drayton.
“Throughout our Chance to Shine Whole School Programme delivery, it was evident that the children and staff were keen to learn and grow through cricket – learning new skills and using teamwork, resilience and problem solving through the sessions.
“When Cricket Shropshire launched their Chance to Shine STREET programme at the Longlands Hub behind the school, a large proportion of those attending were from the school.
“The teachers were supportive and engaging throughout the sessions and actively promoted the work we were doing at the Longlands Hub.
“They especially enjoyed the compete weeks where they were in charge of a game, ensuring the safety, enjoyment and sportsmanship was maintained throughout.
The school has already booked in for Spring 2025 and we cannot wait to continue delivery with them. With the Longlands STREET project continuing throughout the Winter, its looking to be another promising year in Market Drayton for cricket.
“Due to the success of the school and STREET programmes, we have started working with Market Drayton Cricket Club to set up and sustain a Junior Section so that the children in the area have somewhere safe and inclusive to play cricket in the future.”
Primary School Teacher of the Year – the PE team at Shortwood Primary School
Ryan said: “This award recognises the remarkable dedication and impact of engaging teachers and school staff who go above and beyond for their students from all backgrounds and walks of life.
The staff at Shortwood Primary have an outstanding focus on physical education, fostering an enthusiastic environment where students are not only excited about sport in general, but are developing a love for cricket.
“This passion is clear as they actively participate in numerous competitions, showcasing their talents and sportsmanship.
“The strong relationships that teachers cultivate with both ourselves and the students creates a supportive and collaborative atmosphere. Our coaches feel like an integral part of the team rather than a third-party deliverer, which enhances the pupils overall experience through showing that sport is valuable to a well-rounded curriculum.
“The commitment demonstrated by this group of teachers truly exemplifies the spirit of this award.”
Secondary School Teacher – Ceri Kempster
Katy said: “Ceri is a fantastic ambassador for her school and the young people.
“Ceri and Thomas Adams School at Wem have been supporters of the Chance to Shine Programme for several years now, always willing to add cricket into the timetable.
“In doing so she has enthused many girls and supported their transition to the local cricket club.
“Not only does she support the pupils in school with their cricket, she is the driving force behind their competition entry and victories, as the school have held both the Under 13 and Under 15 regional Girls Chance to Compete trophies over the last two years.
“It has been a pleasure to work alongside her to deliver cricket to the pupils, it is clear to see she has a passion for developing all the students she works with. “
Secondary School of the Year – Marches School at Oswestry
Katie said: “My colleagues and I engage with several secondary schools over the course of the school year. It is fantastic when a school get on board with our offer.
“This is exactly what the Marches School did. They got in touch with us at the end of Summer 2023 wanting to engage in our delivery offer, as they were not only teachers, but players of cricket.
“Following this, we were able to book in and deliver sessions during the last academic year. All the teachers engaged and supported delivery of the cricket sessions.
“In addition, they have hosted SEND events and the Young Leaders trained as part of the Chance to Shine Programme and hosted their own primary school competition at the local cricket club Oswestry CC, which many of them are now playing members of.
“It has been fantastic to see the school and their pupils go from strength to strength across all areas of the cricketing programme, from curriculum delivery, to competition, to leadership events. Congratulations to The Marches School.”
SEND School of the Year – The Bridge School
Tyler said: “The Bridge School has shown outstanding participation in our school competitions, excelling in both softball and table cricket. Their enthusiasm and commitment have been truly inspiring.
“Their positive attitude and manners towards our staff have set a wonderful example. Additionally, the involvement of their dedicated teachers has been crucial to their success, fostering a supportive and encouraging environment for their students.
“This award is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and the positive spirit they bring to every game.
“Thank you for embodying the true spirit of cricket”
SEND Teacher of the Year – Tracey Smith
Tyler said: “I’m thrilled to be giving this award to an incredible teacher from The Bridge School – Tracey Smith. She has really stepped upto promote cricket, making sure everyone, regardless of ability, gets to enjoy the game.
“Behind the scenes, she’s worked tirelessly organising events, coaching sessions, and creating opportunities for every student to get involved. Her dedication has turned cricket into more than just a sport at the school —it’s become a way to build community and make lasting connections.
