School U18s make national T20 final

Shrewsbury School Under 18s edged into to their national T20 Cup final after a nail-biting two wicket win against Scarborough College with just one ball to spare.

Hosting the semi-final, the visitors batted first and after an early loss batted well to score 186-4 from their 20 overs with opener Howson hitting 104 off just 59 balls

A superb double wicket last over from Liam Grindlay (2-13) kept Scarborough below the 200 mark which they seemed certain to reach for most of their innings.

Shrewsbury’s other wicket takers were Liam Yahathugoda and Harry Parton.

Shrewsbury’s reply was hampered by the regular loss of wickets which left them in a precarious position at 97-5.

However, a superb 62 off 37 deliveries by Shifnal’s Harry Parton batting at No 4 saw the hosts home with just one ball and 2 wickets to spare.

Parton received good support from opener Yahathugoda (39 off 26 balls), George Battersby (17off 8) and Arjan Barard (19 not out off 12).

Shrewsbury now play Kings Taunton in the final at Wormsley tomorrow (Friday, July3).

They qualified for the semi-final by beating Uppingham School in the quarter-final.

Batting first at home, they posted an impressive 192-6 with Liam Grindlay (42), Parton (35), Jack Hollinshead (48 not out off 27) and Arjan Barard 25 not out the main contributors.

The latter pair put on a crucial 50 run partnership for the seventh wicket in the last five overs of the innings.

Uppingham replied with 171-7 – 22 runs short of their target. Grindlay (3-12) and Under 15 Bryam Mudalige (2-31) were Shrewsbury’s most successful bowlers.

More success for Shrewsbury School U15s in hectic week

It continues to be a busy Summer of Success for Shrewsbury School’s Under 15 Boys.

In the past couple of days, they have qualified for the national final in the ESCA U15s One Day Cup and the Midlands Regional Finals of the ESCA/ECB U15 T20 cup.

Their hectic schedule began with a 10-wicket victory against Cathedral School Hereford in the T20 cup match.

Cathedral were dismissed for 81 with Hugo Bebb taking 4-9 off his 4 overs. Shrewsbury knocked the runs off without loss in the sixth over – Gurveen Singh Athwal hitting 54 off just 24 balls.

A few hours later, they defeated the Staffordshire winners Denstone College by eight wickets in the quarter finals.

Denstone were limited to 82-9 in their 20 overs. Shrewsbury reached their target in the 10th over for the loss of two wickets with Oscar Howarth top scoring with an undefeated 51 off 24 balls.

Shrewsbury have now qualified for the Midlands Regional Finals which they will host on Monday (June 22).

The following day, they visited Altrincham Grammar School in the ESCA U15 One day cup semi-final.

Shrewsbury won the toss and batted first scoring 205-8 in their 40 overs.

Bryan Mudalige (30), Howarth (43), Jake Adams (45) and Jack Swallow 30 were the chief run scorers.

The hosts replied with 202-7 to leave Shrewsbury the narrow winners by just three runs in a thrilling conclusion to the match.

Opening bat Rourke hit 92 off 103 deliveries and appeared to be guiding his side to victory but his dismissal with the score on 188 gave Shrewsbury an opportunity which they managed to take.

Mudalige, Jenkins and Mukherjee each took two wickets apiece.

Shrewsbury now head to the National Final against either Merchant Taylors or Marlborough College early next month.
