Frankwell Cricket Club welcomed some of Shropshire’s most talented young cricketers yesterday as nine schools competed in the Chance to Shine U13 Girls County Finals.
The MCC and The Cricketer have launched their Community Cricket Heroes campaign for 2026 to find another team of unsung grassroots cricketing heroes from across the country – including Shropshire.
As first international Test match of the summer gets underway at Lord’s, the MCC will mark Volunteers’ Week by taking it back to where it all began for many, in the local communities around the country and recognising the people that make these clubs tick.
In the past three years, 33 heroes of grassroots cricket have been welcomed to Lord’s as guests of the MCC President to watch a game from some of the best seats in the house.
A panel selected by MCC will have the task of selecting those who have made an outstanding contribution to their clubs and/or communities.
This year’s winners will once again be invited to Lord’s, where they will be celebrated for their time and effort given to their own clubs.
MCC President Ed Smith commented: “Year four of our MCC Community Cricket Heroes campaign has started, and once again we are asking the cricket community to help us find its unsung champions.
“Whether it’s a coach transforming lives in a state school, a volunteer who has kept a club together through the toughest of times, or someone growing the women and girl’s game from the ground up, we want to hear their story.
“Nominations are open now. Please don’t let your hero go unrecognised.”
The closing date for nominations is 23.59 BST on 15 July 2026 with the selected MCC Community Cricket Heroes announced shortly after.

We’re looking forward to being part of Telford & Wrekin Council’s Urban Games one again during the Summer school half term holidays.
We’re delighted that Shropshire’s own Hafeez Choudhry is featured in the latest edition of the ECB’s Raising the Game bulletin.
The monthly bulletin is issued to the cricket family by the ECB highlighting latest events and trends in the game.
We recently featured Hafeez speaking about his journey with Cricket Shropshire and also his faith and celebrating Ramadan.
The current issue says: “Cricket Shropshire has spotlighted the inspiring journey of Hafeez Choudhry, whose involvement in the game has grown from helping out at community sessions to becoming a Board Director.
“First getting involved in the game through local Chance to Shine Street activity, Hafeez quickly became a dedicated volunteer, supporting coaching sessions and helping bring more people into the game.
“Since then, he has gained coaching qualifications, supported interfaith and community programmes and played a key role in bringing in new participants, including helping a refugee player progress into club cricket.
“Now serving as Director of Communities and Chair of the South Asian “United by Cricket” Forum, Hafeez’s journey is a great example of the impact individuals can have in shaping welcoming, inclusive environments across the game.”
The bulletin also marks recent events such as the Get Set Weekend, which a number of clubs in Shropshire were involved with.
It also highlights the record-breaking Schools Cricket Day which youngsters in Shropshire took part in to mark 50 days to go to the start of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
The bulletin can be viewed via the link below.

Cricket Shropshire held a Christmas celebration at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital at Gobowen with the Spinal Clinic, welcoming around 20 participants for a fun, inclusive session filled with Christmas-themed cricket games and plenty of laughter.
The Board has been delivering sessions at the hospital for the past two years, using cricket as an alternative way to support patients through movement, confidence and connection.
It has been incredible to see people socialising, having fun, knowing they aren’t alone, and being reminded that there are still opportunities to participate and feel part of something.
As part of the celebration, Christmas presents were given to everyone who took part. Remaining gifts were donated to The League of Friends at the Heart of RJAH, helping to spread festive cheer more widely.
Cricket Shropshire Development Administrator Vanessa Russell said: “I was amazed by the atmosphere in the room.
“Seeing people come together, support one another and enjoy themselves through cricket was really special. It’s a powerful reminder of how sport can bring people together, lift spirits and create a genuine sense of belonging.”
This programme is funded through the Peter Harrison Foundation, whose support helps make sessions like this possible.
Thank you to everyone at Gobowen Hospital and The League of Friends at the Heart of RJAH for the continued support — we’re proud to be part of something that makes a real difference.
