Quatt claim U17s T20 Cup
Quatt claimed the inaugural Cricket Shropshire Under 17s T2O Cup with a 50-run victory over Whitchurch at Wroxeter CC in the final.
It is the first time the competition has been played and was launched after consultation with clubs which suggested there was a demand for the competition.
Ten teams entered this season – and with more expressing an interest going forward, the competition is set to be added to the Cricket Shropshire competitions calendar again next year.
Quatt won the toss and decided to bat first with opener Evan Poole setting them on their way with 30 off 22 balls.
But Ollie Dyson then came into the attack for Whitchurch and claimed three quick wickets to reduce Quatt to 56-3.
Bertie Kyte, batting at 5, then anchored the rest of the innings hitting 48 off 43 balls as wickets fell around him as Quatt finished their 20 overs on 135-8.
Dyson finished with impressive figures of 4-16 from his four overs while Bobby Small claimed 2-29.
In reply, Whitchurch lost both openers to run outs which put them on the back foot early on at 26-2.
The Quatt attack then got to work with Ben Musgrave claiming 3-13 with the rest of the wickets shared around as Whitchurch were bowled out for 85. Frank Thompson top scored with 15.
The Player of the Match award chosen by the umpires was given to Bertie Kyte for his innings of 48.
Competition organiser Shannon Aston said: “Congratulations to Quatt on claiming the title, well done to Whitchurch on making the final and thanks to all the teams who entered this year for embracing the new format.
“Huge thanks to all at Wroxeter for hosting the final on the day to the two umpires Ray Collins and Neil Marsh.
“It has been great to see this competition take off this season. Conversations with clubs suggested there was a demand for the an U17s Cup to help bridge the gap between U15s and senior cricket.
“It has also given them the chance to play ‘peer’ cricket against players of their own age – something that wasn’t available before then.
“We have already had expressions of interest about the competition from clubs that were not involved this year, so hopefully we will be able to expand the offer.”
The knockout competition was scheduled to take place from July because many of the youngsters involved would have been taking school exams.
