Special recognition awards handed out

The final awards of the night at Cricket Shropshire Presentation Evening at the Albright Hussey Hotel went to five stalwarts of the game in the county.

They were announced by Chair Adrian Collins and presented by the Board’s Director of Recreational and Disability Cricket Dave White and Director of Community Cricket Hafeez Rehman.

The first three went to a trio who have been members of the MSG Shropshire County League Committee for many years who have now decided to stand down.

The final two accolades are part of the ECB Cricket Collective Awards, recognising those who have played a significant role at their clubs.

Special recognition – Gordon Smith

Adrian said: “Gordon is just completing ten years as chair of the MSG Shropshire County Cricket League.

“He had previously been vice-chairman for three years, from the time the old Shropshire Cricket League and Shropshire Premier League merged in November 2011.

“He has also served on many sub-committees. He was chair of discipline sub-cttee throughout his tenure as chair, and has spent similarly many years on finance, membership & structure, grounds & facilities, sponsorship, and from time-to-time rules as well. Before the merger he was vice-chairman of the old Shropshire Premier League.

“Gordon has run the SCCL with a firm and fair hand, never shirking difficult decisions, or letting people know what he thought!”

‘He also stood as an umpire for many years and was also chair of the Umpires Association for a few years. Gordon ‘stood’ in the premier division and was a well-respected official, winning Umpire of the Year.

“A fantastic servant to Shropshire Cricket over the years who is now standing down to take a well-earned rest, thank you for all you have done Gordon.”

Special recognition – Jamie Dowley

Adrian said: “Jamie joined the Shropshire Cricket League committee in 2004 and is completing 20 years as a committee member.

“He has been the vice-chair for six years, and Rules chair – a very demanding, time-consuming, and responsible post – for eight years. As vice chair he has served on the executive committee of the league.

“The rules chair is a challenging role to fill, there are continual day-to-day issues, particularly in the season. Jamie has carried out this role excellently, ensuring that the fabric of the game is observed through the rules, and applying common sense to ‘greyer’ areas. Not an easy job!

“He has also been a prominent member of Membership & Structure Committee, virtually from the time he joined the main committee, and in the past has been chair of both the Awards and Knockout sub-committees over several seasons.

“Most of Jamie’s work has been ‘behind the scenes’, not high profile, but essential for the smooth running of the league. He has carried this out without fuss and we are greatly indebted for all his efforts.

“A tough gig to follow.”

Special Recognition – Mike Hall

Adrian said: “Mike has been Mr Dependable in Shropshire cricket circles for many years. He is standing down now, and will be sorely missed.

“Mike became treasurer to the old Shropshire Cricket League in 1996 at the time the leagues split, with the leading clubs forming the Shropshire Premier League.

“He remained as treasurer when the leagues merged in late 2011, and in total has served for 28 years. He has been chair of the finance, sponsorship, and cricket balls subs pretty much throughout his tenure.

“Over and above this, Mike has always been the ‘go to’ when challenging situations or decisions have had to be made. A calm influence in sometimes tricky situations.

“Mike has also held other roles in Shropshire Cricket over the years, including as Age Group Manager for county junior teams and treasurer of the Shropshire Coaches Association.

“Many thanks for all your efforts over the years Mike.”

Unsung Hero – Suzi Tomlinson (Sentinel CC)

Adrian said: “Suzi is a dedicated supporter and encourager of the girls’ cricket team, ensuring all players get opportunities to lead and participate.

“Her background as a ski instructor helps them to connect with and develop young cricketers, fostering a nurturing and inclusive environment. She provides one-on-one support, tailoring their coaching to meet each player’s unique needs and strengths.

“Her efforts go beyond typical managerial duties, creating a positive and enriching experience for the team. Her tireless dedication has significantly impacted the players’ development.”

Lifetime Achiever – Roger Furniss (Ludlow CC)

Adrian said: “Roger has been a dedicated member of Ludlow for more than 40 years, contributing as a player, captain, committee member, and umpire.

“Despite stepping down from umpiring, his lively character and commitment to the club remain unwavering.

“The club says this honour helps recognise his exceptional service, dedication, and passion for the game. His presence will continue to be felt, whether through scoring or simply enjoying the matches as a spectator.”
