Raiders Cup a blast in Shropshire

Cricket Shropshrie was delighted to be part of the colourful and vibrant Raiders Cup staged at Bowring Park in Wellington on Mid-Summer’s Day.

The event was hosted by Shrewsbury side Rebel Raiders and featured a mix of sides from the hosts, Telford Strikers, SG Squadron Manchester, Dudley Super Kings (1 & 2), Sheffield Tuskers, Gobowen Oswestry, and the Wrexham Mallu Squad.

Cricket Shropshire’s Development Administrator Vanessa Russell said: “The opening ceremony was a real celebration of cricket and community, bringing together teams, spectators and special guest from a day of action, smiles and togetherness.”

Other guest included the Mayor of Shrewsbury,Alex Wagner, Olympian and Indian high jumper Bobby Aloysius and Cricket Shropshire Lead Officer Steve Reese.

Bobby Aloysius spoke warmly about the power of sport to bring people together, and praised the “electric atmosphere and welcoming spirit” of the event. 

Mayor Alex Wagner echoed the sentiment, adding how proud he was to see such diversity and community engagement on display.

Vanessa said: “I came away very humbled by the generosity and kindness shown by everyone. 

“It was a joy to be part of such a welcoming and inclusive day – cricket really does have a wonderful way of bringing people together.”

And she even had a go herself: “I think I surprised everyone (including myself!) by connecting bat to ball. I’m not saying I’m signing up for the next T20 squad, but I’m taking this as a personal win!”
