New Evening League plan update
We’ve had an encouraging response to plans for a new Evening League in Shropshire to serve the east of the county.
So far, we’ve had expressions of interest from four clubs – Wrekin College, Albrighton, Lilleshall and Newport, with additional informal enquiries.
Cricket Shropshire Lead Officer Steve Reese said: “That means we have two spaces remaining to allow us to get the League off the ground.
“If we get more than six teams, we can consider creating more than one division in the first season to accommodate everyone.”
With this in mind, Cricket Shropshire has decided to put a “closing date” to the EOIs.
Any other teams interested in getting involved are asked to let us know by November 30 by emailing info@cricketshropshire.co.uk
The plan then is to call a meeting of interested clubs to discuss format, rules and other details ahead of the launch in the 2025 season.
The aim of the league is to complement the existing Shrewsbury & District Evening League which has been running for many years serving the central and western areas of Shropshire.
Steve said: “We are hoping the creation of this League will result in less of a logistical challenge for those clubs on the Eastern side of the county who want to play midweek cricket
“We hope with this initiative we will also be able to attract some of those players who have left the traditional formats but still have an affinity with the game, getting siblings playing alongside parents, whilst also increasing female participation.
“We would also welcome entries from those social groups and workplaces who could play as a ‘hybrid’ of a few club players similar to Shrewsbury-based Grasshoppers side and similar teams from former years.”
