Team honours celebrated at Women & Girls’ awards

Our second focus on the Women & Girls Awards Evening today is on the Women’s club awards handed out during the event.

The event was held recently at the Albrighton Hall Hotel near Shrewsbury celebrating the successes of a brilliant season of Women & Girls’ cricket across Shropshire.

Women’s Midweek League – Shifnal CC

Cricket Shropshire’s Women & Girls’ Officer Naomi Payne said: “It was a successful year for Shifnal this year, with another storming season.

“With a number of very strong, experienced individuals and the introduction of some talented youngsters playing a high standard of cricket, they’ve become a formidable midweek team.

“They accumulated 122 points across their five games, going undefeated and topping the batting Hall of Fame.”

Unfortunately, Shifnal were not in attendance on the evening to receive their award

Women’s County Hardball League – Oswestry CC

Cricket Shropshire’s Sacha Lee said: “It’s been a very exciting season for Oswestry this year, continuing where they left off in 2025.

“With their blend of experienced heads and a collection of incredibly talented youngsters, they’ve created a very strong bond which is doubtless a key factor in their recent success.

“They enjoyed eight wins, one loss, a game lost to rain, and amassed 188 .

Women’s Division 1 Hardball League – Pontesbury CC

Naomi said: “It’s been a pleasure seeing this team gain so much success from their Summer, particularly in this hardball format with a mixture of seasoned cricketers and developing young players – some of whom have represented at County/MCC level.

“Securing promotion back into the County league is a fantastic feat for them and it’s absolutely the right place for them.”

Women’s County Softball League – Oswestry CC

Sacha said: “Again, Oswestry found success during their softball campaign with seven wins, two losses and a draw against strong competition.

“Giving a number of their young, developing players a chance in the game, they certainly proved their worth across the summer. Spreading various names across the Hall of Fame and finishing their season on 180 points.”

Women’s Division 1 Softball League – Allscott Heath CC

Naomi said: “It was a different challenge for our Division 1 winners this year in a new league, but their journey through the summer has proved successful once again.

“With a well-rounded group of individuals appearing regularly in the Halls of Fame, they have once again secured promotion after topping the table with an impressive 225 points, losing only two of their 10 games.”

Women’s Division 2 Softball League – Column CC

Naomi said: “Despite the league not quite going as smoothly as we had hoped, it was clear to see this team put in a remarkable amount of effort to fulfil their fixtures and make a statement as one of Shropshire fairly new teams.

“Expertly led and managed, they were able to complete a small handful of their games where they found success.

“Competing in many of our festivals across the summer, and hosting a cracking festival of their own, we look forward to seeing this team play their cricket in a new, more competitive league – much more fitting of their style.”

Most Welcoming Women’s Club – Oswestry CC

Sacha said: “This award has been running for a few years now, and it really boils down to unlocking good spirit, community, inclusion and support.

“If we went out to everyone in this room, I’m pretty sure we’d all unanimously say that we have a thriving, friendly and welcoming Women’s network.

“We put the vote out to the network and, this year, we asked everyone to share the reasons for their choice. Some of the comments were:

  • They are always nice and very welcoming
  • Good team spirit… and a nice pint after the game
  • A happy bunch who encourages everyone that is playing
  • Mutual, competitive support on the pitch and always a welcoming atmosphere
  • Hosted a wonderful event that we all really enjoyed

“It was head-to-head for some time, with three teams sitting on the same amount of votes.

“Honorary mentions go to Pontesbury and Willey who both received very similar comments on friendly welcomes, great atmosphere and competitive support but with seven votes, winning by a margin of four votes at the close of play and your Most Welcoming Women’s Club for 2026 is Oswestry CC.”

Look out for a further story on the Awards Night’s individual winners.
