Women’s XI claim win at Fenner’s
A brilliant second wicket partnership between Libby Thomas and skipper Lara Jones set Shropshire’s women on course for their first 50 over win of the campaign.
They came together in the second over of the innings after skipper Jones had won the toss and elected to bat first against Cambridgeshire at Fenner’s.
Thomas then hit 95 off 114 balls and Jones made 41 as they put on 181 for the second wicket.
Although they both fell in quick succession, 43 off 33 balls from Cerys Tippings and 33 off 22 from Isabella Lawrence-Posso helped Shropshire finish their innings on 311-9.
In the reply, opener Hayley Brown proved the stumbling block as she hit 136 not out off 132 balls.
It looked like it would be a tight finish as the hosts reached 216 before the sixth wicket fell after recovering from 109-5.
But the Shropshire attack kept chipping away at the other end with Kate Brazier (3-44) Sophia Parton (3-46) and Jones (3-54) helping to bowl the hosts out for 275 with seven balls remaining in their innings.
The previous weekend had seen Shropshire host table toppers Devon at Worfield CC.
Shropshire won the toss and batted first and were given a good start by Thomas (25) and Jones.
But although Alex Hale chipped in with 34, Shropshire were bowled out for 179.
The visitors chased down their target for the loss of just one wicket, Parton picking up one of the openers in her first over.
The Women’s XI are next in action on Sunday, August 16 when they hope to build on their victory when they travel to Swindon to take on Wiltshire.
