All systems go for new U17s County Cup

Due to popular demand, Cricket Shropshire is delighted to launch a pilot Under 17s T20 County Cup this Summer.

After asking clubs for expressions of interest, we received ten entries from clubs across Shropshire for the competition which is due to be played in July and August.

Cricket Shropshire Lead Officer Steve Reese said: “Feedback from clubs suggested there may be a demand for an Under 17s competition, so we decided to test the water.

“We were really pleased with the response with enough entries to launch the Under 17s T20 County Cup.

“This is an indication of the growing strength of junior cricket in Shropshire – this year we already had more players and teams taking part in our junior competitions than in previous seasons from U11s to U15s level.

“The Under 17s competition will give teenagers the chance to test their skills against their peers across the county.

“It will also bridge the gap that has existed between junior competitions and playing in senior sides as part of the player pathway and hopefully encourage youngsters to stay in the game.

“We have scheduled the competition to take place in July and August to avoid the school exam season.

“It is also great to see two neighbouring clubs combining in Newport and Lilleshall who didn’t have enough players for their own individual teams.

“The more opportunities we give for these youngsters to play, the better.”

Teams involved include Whitchurch, Shelton, Quatt, Codsall, Allscott Heath, Wellington, Oswestry, Alberbury, Lilleshall/Newport and Sentinel.
