T20 Championship Challenge Cup match planned

A special Championship Challenge Cup match between two of the best T20 sides in the county has been arranged by Cricket Shropshire and the Shrewsbury & District Evening League Management Committee.

It will see the winners of the new Furrows East Shropshire Mid-Week League take on the champions of the Shrewsbury and District Evening League.

St Georges clinched the inaugural Furrows League title last week by winning their final game of the season against nearest rivals Church Eaton to remain unbeaten.

Grasshoppers once again claimed the long-running Shrewsbury and District Evening League crown last week with a victory over Wem.

Now the winners of the two games will meet in the challenge match at Allscott Heath CC on Tuesday, August 5, with a start time of 6.15pm and spectators welcome.

Cricket Shropshire Lead Officer Steve Reese said: “We thought this would be a great opportunity to bring together two of the best T20 sides in the county together for a showpiece game.

“The Shrewsbury and District Evening League has been running for many years giving players the chance to get involved in mid-week cricket in the area.

“This year, we decided to launch the Furrows East Shropshire Mid-Week League to fill the gap for an evening league on the other side of the county – and it has proved a huge success.

“We had nine teams in the league this season, and have had a number of other clubs express and interest on joining next year, which is brilliant to see.

“The aim is to provide as many opportunities as possible for people to get involved in cricket and play the game, with the shorter format allowing for those who may not have the time at a weekend.

“With the evening league seasons now coming to a close, it seemed an ideal opportunity to bring the winners of both leagues the chance to play each other in what should be a great game of cricket.

“Huge thanks to Jason at Allscott Heath for helping out by providing a venue, it would be great to see a few people watching the players showcase their skills.”
