Festival fun at Worfield shows affiliation package at work

The new Affiliation initiative launched this year by Cricket Shropshire aims to bring together schools and clubs to boost the game across the county.

An example is at Worfield Cricket Club who signed up for the Board’s enhanced affiliation offered at the start of the year – and it has already delivered impressive results.

As part of the package, Cricket Shropshire’s coaches Tim and Shannon delivered in-school sessions at Claverley Primary School and Worfield Primary School, targeting pupils in Years 5 and 6.

The programme culminated in a fun and energetic cricket festival at Worfield Cricket Club, with 48 children taking part across multiple teams in a round-robin style tournament.

Mrs Jo Dere, head at Claverley Primary School, said: “Our pupils absolutely loved being part of this project.

“It has helped them develop skills, knowledge, and – most importantly – confidence. As a school, we couldn’t have created an opportunity like this on our own, so having access to this programme has been incredible.”

Mrs Laura Anson, Headt at Worfield Primary School, said: “The coaching package had a massive impact. Some of our children went on to join the local cricket club as a result.

“It’s boosted engagement, physical activity, and even mental wellbeing. We couldn’t have done this without the support of the club and Cricket Shropshire.”

Worfield Vice Chair Charlotte said: “We are absolutely delighted with the outcome. The festival was a success, and the coaching built real excitement. As a result, we’ve welcomed new junior players—children we may never have reached otherwise.”

Adding to the day’s success were student leaders from Bridgnorth Endowed School, who helped support the event.

Four of these young leaders are players at Worfield CC, with others taking part through school. Their involvement added a strong community element and helped the event run smoothly while providing them with valuable leadership experience.

Vanessa Russell, Development Administrator at Cricket Shropshire, praised the event: “It was brilliant to see how engaged the children were. There was a real buzz on the day, with plenty of cricket, smiles, and positivity.

“The setting at Worfield CC was fantastic.”

Look out for further reports of the work done as part of the enhanced affiliation packages throughout the Summer.
