Dragons claim Furrows Evening League title

St Georges A claimed the inaugural Furrows East Shropshire Mid-Week League crown with victory over closest rivals Church Eaton Knights to remain unbeaten.
The end of the first season in the new competition also saw a number of awards handed out to mark individual and team achievements.
It was a fitting climax to the exciting competition as St Georges travelled to their nearest rivals Church Eaton with the destination of the league trophy on the line.
Batting first, the Dragons were reduced to 52-3 with Will Ross claiming 3-20 with opener Muhammad Raheel Khattak hitting 20.
Faizan Khan then hit 50 off just 23 balls before he retired, Krishna Bammidi made 43 and Manish Kumar 20 to boost their final total to 191-6 off their 20 overs.
All the top order Knights batters got starts, and Douglas Hughes hit 37 off 26 balls, but they lost wickets at regular intervals as they were restricted 149-7 to give St Georges victory and the title by 42 runs.
Venkatesh Madala was the standout bowler for the Dragons with 4-14 from his four overs, while Raja Janga chipped in with two wickets.
In addition to the final, four individual and team awards were presented to celebrate outstanding contributions across the league.
Friendliest Team – Lilleshall CC were recognised for their welcoming spirit and sportsmanship throughout the competition.
Bowler of the Season – Ibrar Ahmed (St Georges 2nd XI) took home the award for the most wickets.

Batter of the Season – Chris Morris (Albrighton CC) was honoured for his consistency and impact at the crease.
Young Player of the Season – Joe Roberts (Forton CC), who captained his side and finished as the league’s top run scorer, was commended for his leadership and skill. Joe made it to the final to collect his award in person, showing great humility and gratitude…a gracious and worthy winner. (pictured left).
Cricket Shropshire’s Steve Reese (Lead Officer), Sacha Lee (Schools & Community Programme Officer), and Vanessa Russell (Development Administrator) all attended the final.
The trophies and medals were presented by umpires Colin Wetherley-Mein and Dave Nock.
Vanessa said: “It was amazing to be there to see the end of what has been a fantastic league, the first of its kind that we as a board have run.
“The atmosphere, the effort from all teams, and the sense of community has been brilliant. We’ve already had interest from more clubs for next season, so it’s only going to get bigger and better.”
“Congratulations to all the players, volunteers, and supporters who made this inaugural Furrows Mid-Week League such a success. Here’s to an even stronger 2026 season!”
Big thanks to Furrows for their sponsorship of the competition which helped us launch it this year to fill a gap for clubs in the East of the county who wanted an evening league competition.
There is one more rearranged fixture due to be played this week as Lilleshall take on Priorslee.
