Coaches in awards spotlight

Our second batch of awards from the Cricket Shropshire Presentation Evening held at The Shropshire Golf Centre in Telford features three coaches from clubs around the County.

The awards were presented by Chris Dirkin who has been involved in coaching and coach development in Shropshire for many years as part of the Coaches Association.

Coach of the year – Paul Willis (Wellington)

Ed said: “Paul has been a dedicated and enthusiastic member of Wellington Cricket Club for many years, making an exceptional contribution across several roles. As coach of the Under-15 team, he delivers high-quality, engaging sessions that build both skill and confidence, continuing his coaching even through the school holidays to give young players a safe, structured space to stay active and connected.

“Alongside coaching, Paul captains the Sunday Friendly side and regularly umpires, leading with fairness, encouragement, and a genuine love for the game. He also plays for the Saturday 4th XI, where his calm, supportive approach helps younger players find their feet in senior cricket.

“Balancing all these roles with humility and care, Paul truly embodies the spirit of community cricket — his passion, leadership, and kindness have left a lasting mark on everyone at Wellington Cricket Club.”

Young Coach of the Year – Harry Thomas (Sentinel)

Ed said: “Harry has made an incredible impact on the club’s junior section, showing maturity and dedication well beyond his years. His attention to detail, encouragement, and enthusiasm make every session enjoyable and engaging for the children.

The juniors look up to him, not just as a coach but as a role model — someone who inspires confidence, positivity, and a genuine love for the game. Harry has created a brilliant environment for young players to learn, grow, and have fun, and we’re so proud to recognise his fantastic contribution.”

Outstanding Contribution – Services to Coaching -– Guy Thompson (Bridgnorth)

Ed said: “Guy has given so much to Shropshire Cricket over a long period. A skilful, thoughtful and passionate coach who influenced so many young cricketers within the county.

“He has worked within the age group pathway for more than 25 years, teaching young players the value of representing their county and passing on significant knowledge and skills to all they worked with.

“He has also guided and supported coaches as well as players – working as an ECB tutor or Coach Developer for more than 15 years.

“Guy is a high-quality mentor and excellent sounding board for advice. He has been a loyal servant (playing and coaching) to his local club, Bridgnorth, for longer than I can look back on! The mark of this individual is the impact he can have on not only cricket development but personal development. My thanks and appreciation go to Guy Thompson.”

More reports highlighting the awards to follow in the coming days.
