Opening Up mental health workshop
A workshop for Shropshire cricket clubs to promote positive mental health in the game will be held at Wem Cricket Club next month.
It takes place in the club house in Wem in Soulton Road, SY4 5HR on October 14 from 7pm.
The workshop will be run by Mark Boyns from Opening Up Cricket – formed in 2014 in response to the death of Sefton Park CC’s Alex Miller in 2014.
Cricket Shropshire Lead Officer Steve Reese said: “We decided to organise this workshop to hear from Mark and Opening Up Cricket to help promote positive mental health in the game in Shropshire.
“We have seen examples of cricketers, both male and female, who were members of Shropshire clubs who have taken their own life in recent years.
“We are all part of the cricket family and want to try and look out for each other to ensure further similar tragedies do not happen, so we would encourage all clubs to consider taking part.”
The workshop topics will include:
Mental skills for cricket and life
Looking out for others
Spotting signs
Confidence in signposting
Opening Up Cricket was created with the aim of speaking to local cricketers about the experience of losing Alex in the hope that more conversations about this topic could prevent further tragedies.
The team includes cricketers Kate Cross, Paul Horton, Tara Norris, Paul Smith, Ethan Bamber, Fi Morris, Tom Alsop and Kiran Carlson.
They have delivered more than 400 sessions across the United Kingdom and Australia.
It is run by unpaid volunteers with help from the National Lottery Community Fund who have provided a grant for sessions costs so that groups can receive them without charge.
